OpenAI unveils new ChatGPT experience for teens with built-in parental controls

OpenAI on Wednesday announced that it's adding a college planner tool to its ChatGPT for Teens along with new study features on the platform.
The artificial intelligence (AI) giant announced that its college planner feature will launch in ChatGPT for Teens in the next few weeks, with the planner helping to organize application requirements, deadlines, tasks and financial-aid steps across the colleges the user is considering.
OpenAI's announcement said the initial experience is being designed for U.S. students in grades 10-12 who are planning to attend a four-year college. The company plans to expand it in the future to support two-year colleges, technical colleges, trade schools and also students in other countries.
The college planner tool includes financial-aid support to help understand application requirements, track aid deadlines at specific schools they're considering, and also to explore scholarships and fee waivers.

OpenAI's College Planner is more focused on the process of how to apply to colleges, track progress and ask questions – rather than deciding where to attend. The company says decisions about where and how to apply to college remain the subject of conversations between students, their families, counselors and prospective colleges.
Teens considering multiple colleges can update their progress in the planner, using its timeline to plan their next steps and remaining tasks. They may also ask ChatGPT questions while using the planner to better understand a requirement or suggestions on how to get started on it.
The announcement from OpenAI said the rollout of ChatGPT for Teens saw nearly 1.2 million teens use Learning Visualizations to better understand math and science concepts, and over 180,000 used Study Mode for step-by-step learning support.

OpenAI is also partnering with the College Advising Corps to expand their work into new states and create an AI fellowship through which advisors can test and share ways AI may support advising and program delivery. The College Advising Corps places recent college graduates as advisors in under-resourced high schools to help students navigate the path to higher education.
"For students navigating the college application process, an unanswered question about a form, deadline, or fee can feel like a closed door. College Advising Corps advisors help students work through those moments with confidence," said College Advising Corps CEO Ekaterina Struett.
"We see promise in College Planner as a tool that can help students prepare for those conversations, stay on track, and continue moving toward a college that is affordable and aligned with their goals," Struett added.

OpenAI's announcement also noted it will be rolling out new study features in ChatGPT for Teens, including the ability to create and save flashcard decks from uploaded notes or a selected topic, revisit missed cards and schedule future practice.
It's also taking steps to make it easier to turn uploaded notes into interactive quizzes and to recognize when a user is trying to create one.

Other new features include making multipage note-scanning available on iOS, while continuous photo capture combines several images into one PDF ready to upload to ChatGPT. Support for the tool on Android is under development.
