A Southern California-based marketing firm announced Tuesday that it’s moving its global headquarters away from the state next year.

Advantage Solutions, which was established in Irvine in 1987, is moving its corporate headquarters to St. Louis, Missouri, the company said in a news release.

The company said relocating will allow its staff to “reach clients more efficiently” and interact more in person. Many of the firm’s clients are located in the Midwest, including Target, which is headquartered in Minneapolis, and Walmart, which is headquartered in Arkansas, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Advantage Solutions helps companies with retail, sales and marketing strategies, according to its website. It has physical offices in North America but has “strategic investments” in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe, according to the news release. The company has more than 70,000 employees and is a Fortune 1,000 business, according to the news release.

Dave Peacock, the firm’s CEO, said in the release that he believes St. Louis is also a thriving city for “top universities” and “affordable living.”

Despite Peacock’s remarks, St. Louis’ downtown area is one of the medium-sized cities struggling most to match its pre-pandemic level of activity, according to a 2022 study by the University of Toronto. The city had only been able to bounce back to 50% of its activity before the coronavirus pandemic, the study found, better than only seven other cities in the study (one of which was Oakland).

Advantage Solutions will keep its headquarters in Irvine as a “collaboration hub” and open an additional hub in Chicago, according to the release. The firm will also retain its offices in Minneapolis; Toronto; San Antonio; Rogers, Arkansas; and Cincinnati.
