Whether you prefer your popcorn buttered and salted, glazed with caramel, drizzled with chocolate or coated with cheese, National Popcorn Day is a great time to partake in it.

Jan. 19 is the day to celebrate the iconic snack food by getting out your air popper or maybe testing some different flavors of gourmet style popcorn.

“I think what makes popcorn such a popular snack is the fact that it can be enjoyed anywhere, anytime and there is an endless choice of flavors,” said Eric Ainsworth, owner of Schultz Popcorn in St. Clair Shores. “Our customers really like the kettle corn, caramel corn, dill pickle popcorn and our signature flavor, the mix, which is a combination of caramel and cheddar cheese popcorn for that all-in-one taste of sweet and savory.”

Ainsworth’s personal favorite is s’mores: Hershey chocolate, marshmallows and graham cracker crumbles all intertwined with basic popcorn.

“Every bite tastes just like you are biting into a s’mores,” Ainsworth said.

Dee Wildner, owner of The Popped Kernel in Shelby Township, said she typically carries more than 30 flavors in the store at one time, rotating various seasonal flavors throughout the year.

She offers free samples of all popcorn flavors every day and on National Popcorn Day, four and eight-cup bags of popcorn will be $1 off.
