The PAT McGRATH LABS Mothership V Eyeshadow Palette in Bronze Seduction is one of the most hyped-up, luxurious, and expensive eye makeup palettes in the world. Good news is that it was recently launched in India. Naturally, we were curious to see how it fares, given the fanfare around it, so here’s our review!

The price tag in question
It retails for a whopping Rs 10,290 in India. Even in the U.S.A, it is priced at $128, which is Rs 10,209.82. So, it’s one of the most expensive eyeshadow palettes, no matter which part of the world you’re in.

• Shadow equality feels like an elusive concept till you actually dip into a premium palette and see how easy-to-use it is.
• Certain shadows in this palette redefine the meaning of smoothness, pigment quality, and ease of blending, making that a huge plus point about this product.
• This palette also contains some unique colours you won’t find elsewhere.
• Last but not the least, this product is from a brand owned by one of the most celebrated makeup artists in the world, Pat McGrath, and that name carries quite a bit of weight.

Hand swatches are never a good reflection of what a shadow will look like when used on the eyes. But with different brushes, we have still swatched these colours in natural and artificial lights.

• The first shade from the top is an iridescent glitter which shifts between pink, green and gold. It needs to be layered to get a linear, foiled sheen. Two swipes will result in specks of sparkle sparsely distributed, as seen on the swatch above.
• The second shade is a blue-toned white glitter with a blinding golden shift to it. It is quite pigmented, especially when applied with the fingertips.
• The third shade is a warm, coppery rose-gold hue which is also made of glitter.
• The fourth shade is a shiny red shimmer shadow which has the most pigmented and silky formula.
• The fifth shade is a burnished dark gold which isn’t very reflective, but is quite pigmented even with one swipe.
• The sixth shade is a soft, matte chocolate brown which has a really smooth formula.
• The seventh shade from the top is a lighter brown with a tinge of terracotta. This shade is matte as well, and is ideal as a transition shade for the crease of the eyelids.
• The eighth shade is a brown glitter with greenish-white shimmer particles. This shade is a tad patchy and needs to be layered on for a decent amount of saturation.
• The ninth or second last shade is a matte eggplant colour which tends to get patchy like many purple shadows. It needs to be applied on primed and powdered lids to blend well.
• The last shade swatched is a soft and creamy champagne-beige shimmer which is quite muted. It’s great as an inner-corner highlight. A single wash of it across the lids also works well for an everyday look.

A palette like this allows you to create a lot of different looks, which is probably why it is so popular.
1. You can create a neutral, soft-glam look with the first champagne shimmer shadow on the top left corner, and use the matte dark brown in the bottom row as an eyeliner.

2. The aubergine matte can be paired with the dark, grunge-y glitter next to it for a vampy evening look. Both shadows are a tad patchy, and several coats of the glitter are needed for its sheen to be visible.

3. The most stunning one, though, is the red shimmer shadow, which feels and looks like satin on the eyes, and is gorgeously reflective and multi-dimensional. Here, it’s been paired with the rose gold glitter at the inner corners, and doesn’t look as red or dark on the skin as it does in the pan.

4. The two glitters at the end can be used for creating a festival-esque party on the eyes, with the white as the inner corner highlight, and the green as an avante garde all-over lid colour.

5. The gold and light, terracotta brown next to it are perfect for an earthy, bronzed, soft-glam look.

Hits and misses in the PAT McGRATH LABS Mothership V Eyeshadow Palette – Bronze Seduction

The misses
• The dull, brassy, brownish glitter shadow does not pack a punch, and needs to be layered significantly in order to show up.
• The glitter shadows can feel quite scratchy on the lids, pretty much like all glitter, which is a shame because one would expect the texture of a shadow this premium to be better.
• The matte aubergine hue is patchy and hard to blend if you apply it on bare lids or without powdering your eye primer.
The hits
• The two matte brown shadows in this palette are soft, buttery perfection.
• The red shimmer shadow has the silkiest, smoothest texture, and looks gorgeously multi-dimensional on the lids.
• Even though the glitters are scratchy (which, frankly, all glitters are), these sparkly shadows look absolutely stunning on the lids.
• The two multi-chrome, iridescent glitter hues are extremely unique.
• The greenish golden shadow with a pink shift looks different from every angle, so it can make for a stunning look even when worn alone.
• The white glitter shadow with an icy blue and golden shift is exquisitely shiny and unique.
• There are a lot of warm-toned colours which can work very well across skin tones, and the shadows are all pigmented enough to actually show up on deeper skin, even though some of the glitter shades need layering for the shine to be significant.
• The palette is quite versatile in terms of the range of looks you can create, so it can serve as a good palette for both everyday, neutral looks, and fun, edgy eyeshadow moments.
• The packaging is heavy and good quality, with a thick mirror inside. The luxe gold and black detailing makes it an elegant addition to one’s dressing table.
Does it warrant the price tag?
A palette like this certainly warrants a high price tag because it is special, high quality, and gives the eyes a stunning look which will attract questions like, “What are you wearing on your eyes?” But, that high price does not have to be quite this high, either.
• At the end of the day, a product like this is worth it for those who only buy luxury makeup, and like products in the range of brands like Tom Ford, Dior, or Marc Jacobs.
• If you’re a professional makeup artist or a beginner, this is a good product because it gives an amazing finish without requiring much effort.
• If you’re a makeup lover who enjoys trying out new palettes and already owns lots of products, this is worth buying just for the unique glitter shadows and matte browns.
• However, if you aren’t picky about your makeup, and don’t like experimenting a lot with unique colours, textures or glitters, this is not the palette for you.
