Popular Louisville fruit market moving east end location as part of new business strategy
A local grocer is introducing a new business strategy, which begins with moving one of its stores, according to Louisville Business First.Paul’s Fruit Market is planning to move its current store at 4946 Brownsboro Road to a new building at 4966 U.S. 42. It’s just moving down the road, but Director of Operations Ben Coomes said the new space will allow the longtime Louisville grocer to introduce a new business approach.“We’ve been in that existing store for, I think it’s approaching 50 years,” Coomes said. “We just added so many things that we’ve just kind of outgrown the space.”Coomes said the store started out just selling produce, but it has since added offerings like a deli, gourmet items, gift baskets, plants, catering and more. With the new location, Paul’s will be adding even more options, like prepared food kits and grab-and-go selections. It will also have covered parking. Paul’s Fruit Market has four retail operations in Louisville: Brownsboro Road, Taylorsville Road, Chenoweth Lane and Shelbyville Road. Coomes said most of stores are around 5,000 to 6,000 square feet.The bigger plan for its new U.S. 42 storefront allows the business to change up its layout and introduce new offerings.“This is, in a way, a prototype,” Coomes said. “This is the first store that we’ve actually taken the time to say, ‘We’ve outgrown this. What exactly is our business model? Do we want to change anything? What do we want to do for the next 20 years?’”Coomes said the store is expected to be open by the fall.
