Pitt Overpowered By #14 Virginia Tech In ACC Opener Sunday

BLACKSBURG, VA – The Pitt women’s basketball team (6-8, 0-1 ACC) dropped their ACC opener on Sunday afternoon on the road to #14 Virginia Tech by the score of 91-41. Liatu King led the Panthers in scoring for the 10th time as she finished the game with 19 points and four rebounds.

Aislin Malcolm finished her afternoon with nine points while Gabby Hutcherson added eight points off the bench in the loss for Pitt.

As a team, Pitt was held to 29.4% shooting in the loss while the Hokies shot 51.5% from the floor. The Panthers were outrebounded 40-28 in the game while Virginia Tech hit 14 three-pointers compared to just three by Pitt.

The Hokies opened the first quarter with 10 straight points as they drained a pair of triples before Pitt was able to get a free throw from Liatu King to stop the streak. Aislin Malcolm and Gabby Hutcherson connected on jumpers as the Panthers entered the second quarter trailing the Hokies 22-5.

Pitt responded with a strong start to the second quarter as King scored six points and Hutcherson buried a triple to give the Panthers a 9-0 run to start the period. After the media timeout, the Hokies outscored the Panthers 12-2 as they took the 34-16 lead into the locker room.

Virginia Tech opened the third quarter on a 9-3 run to force Pitt into a timeout trailing 43-19 early in the second half. Out of the timeout, King and Malcolm buried jumpers but the Hokies closed the quarter on a 19-6 run to take the 65-29 lead into the fourth.

The Hokies continued to roll in the fourth quarter as they opened the final frame with the first five points before Hutcherson knocked down a triple. King finished the fourth quarter strong with six points down the stretch to finish with 19 as the Hokies secured the 91-41 home victory.

Game Notes

  • With the loss, Pitt falls to 4-16 all-time against the Hokies including a 1-9 record in Blacksburg. The Hokies have won eight straight in the series.
  • King finished with 19 points in the loss as she has scored in double figures in all 14 games this season.
