At the D23 Expo, which was held in Anaheim, CA, Marvel Studios showed the trailer for its new movie Werewolf By Night. According to Collider.com, the film will be released as a television special on October 7th, just in time for Halloween. The film is shot in black and white which reminds us of classic horror films from the first half of the 20th century. This film is a departure from the classic Marvel content such as Spiderman, The Hulk, and The Fantastic Four. Will people like this new direction for Marvel?
Werewolf by Night characters originated in comic books that were published by Marvel Comics during the 1970’s. Gail Garcia Bernal stars as the main character, Jack Russell, whose ancestors have a lycanthropy curse due to a run in with Dracula. On Jack’s 18th birthday he realizes his power to change into a wolf-man whenever there is a full moon. In the comic book Jack sometimes cannot control what he does during the three days of the full moon that he is a werewolf. But as Jack evolves he begins to be able to control how and when he transforms into a werewolf. He is definitely not the usual Marvel superhero but he does come in contact with other Marvel characters throughout his travels, such as Frankenstein Monster, Ghost Rider, and even Iron Man. By the end of the comic Jack is able to control his beastly urges and is using his super human powers to help others and combat the forces of evil.
This movie will attract a lot of horror movie fans and people who have never watched Marvel movies before. Perhaps Jack Russell will become a recurring character like many others in the Marvel universe. It will be interesting to see Marvel navigate a horror film, this could be a breakout for Marvel heading into the dark side.
