Hy-Vee closed the standalone Wahlburgers in West Des Moines

Mark, Donnie and Paul Wahlberg appeared in West Des Moines in 2018 when this location of Wahlburgers, the second in Iowa, opened.

Back in 2018, the celebrity Wahlberg brothers Danny, Mark and Paul made the trip to West Des Moines to open their second Wahlburgers location in Iowa. More than 5,000 people packed into the parking lot just north of Costco in the Jordan Creek Town Center location to watch actors Mark and Donnie Wahlberg and their chef brother Paul Wahlberg talk.

Four years later and the 7,100-square-foot standalone location at 7105 Mills Civic Pkwy. in West Des Moines permanently closed. Two signs in the windows refer diners to the Wahlburgers inside Hy-Vee at 1005 Hickman Road in Waukee.

“With the changing nature of the restaurant business combined with staffing challenges, we are evolving our strategy when it comes to this particular Wahlburgers restaurant location,” Tina Pothoff, the senior vice president of communications at Hy-Vee, said in an email to the Des Moines Register. “Hy-Vee will now only be opening Wahlburgers at Hy-Vee locations going forward.”

Some of the work Mark and Donnie Wahlberg did during the careers shows up in a piece of artwork on the ceiling at the Wahlburgers in West Des Moines.

Wahlburgers offers hamburgers along with fish, chicken and vegetarian options as well as a full bar. Customers can look up at artwork that calls out the acting brothers’ works — “The Sixth Sense” and “Blue Bloods” for Donnie and “Boogie Nights” and “The Departed” for Mark. Brother Paul developed the menu, calling out the matriarch’s favorite dishes such as bacon mac and cheese and chili on the menu.
