Hot Springs Music Club opens 2022-23 season Sept. 18

The 2022-23 season of the Hot Springs Music Club will open at 3 p.m. Sept. 18 at Hope Church, 836 Shady Grove Road, club President Tom Bolton recently announced.

There will be performances by vocal duo Jolene Williams and Gay Strakshus, flutist Shelley Martin, the HSMC Ladies Ensemble under the direction of Bolton, and a “special guest appearance by Hot Springs’ nationally renowned mezzo-soprano Sarah Mesko,” a news release said.

Mesko, a Hot Springs native, attended Lakeside High School. “She has been acclaimed in major newspaper reviews for her ‘rich mezzo soprano’ voice and musicality,” the release said. Mesko is known for her portrayal of the title role in “Carmen” at Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. She has appeared with the Metropolitan Opera in Rodelinda (Eduige), Semiramide (Arsace), Carmen (Mercédès), Die Zauberflöte (Zweite Dame), and Il Trovatore (Ines). She made her European debut in Paris in Lully’s Armide (La Sagesse/Sidonie).

Each year, the club presents free music programs to the public and awards music scholarships to Garland County students pursuing degrees in music. HSMC also sponsors a Junior Music Festival annually at which young participants perform and receive written feedback from a qualified judge.

Future public performances will be on Oct. 16, featuring OBU Percussion Ensemble; Nov. 13, featuring American music; Jan. 15, featuring the Hot Springs High Dance Troupe; and March 12, featuring The Village Chorale and Brazilian music by Elsen Portugal.

“We will celebrate National Music Week the first week in May and present our Student Honors Recital on May 7,” the release said.

The club has as its mission the “promotion of the musical culture of its members and to foster in the community an increased knowledge and love of good music. HSMC has been affiliated since its founding in 1951 with the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Arkansas Federation of Music Clubs.”
