Playing its fifth game in as many days, Clemson needed a solid performance from freshman Joe Allen to save the bullpen for this weekend’s road series at Georgia Tech. Allen came through, giving up just two runs in six innings to help the Tigers pick up a 6-2 road win at Kennesaw State, Wednesday.
Allen didn’t get the win, leaving with the game tied before the bats and bullpen brought it home for Clemson. Reed Garris and Jackson Lindley held the Owls scoreless over the last three innings while the Tigers lineup finally found some traction in the eighth inning.
Clemson batters registered just five hits, four of them singles, but was able to capitalize on a dozen walks and three Kennesaw State errors. Two of those errors proved very costly as the Tigers rolled to a four-run eighth. Cooper Ingle led off the inning with a single to left, extending his hitting streak to 16 games. Walks to Will Taylor and Blake Wright loaded the bases for Riley Bertram. Bertram’s single plated two runs and a throwing error on the play left runners at second and third. Jacob Jarrell followed with a suicide squeeze bunt that was thrown away, leading to two more runs.
Clemson (14-8, 1-2) gets back into conference action this weekend with a three-game set at Georgia Tech. The Tigers and the Yellow Jackets open their series in Atlanta at 6 p.m., Friday.
