Chelsea tipped to win £50m+ ‘bidding war’

Chelsea have the financial muscle to outbid most London property developers as they look to buy land to expand Stamford Bridge.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Blues’ long-held ambitions to raise capacity at their 41,837-seater home.

Chelsea were previously granted planning permission for a £1billion expansion project but the plans were shelved after former owner Roman Abramovich’s visa was not renewed in 2018.

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday (9 September) that the Todd Boehly regime have now registered their interest in a 1.2-acre, £50million-valued site adjacent to Stamford Bridge.

The club already owns a large plot of land surrounding the stadium but would need to acquire the land, which has been put up for sale by the Stoll housing association, to realise their ambitions for their stadium.

It is claimed that property developers are also interested in buying the site to build apartments.

But Plumley backs Chelsea to win any potential bidding war.

Putting an upper limit on this is really tough,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“You have to look at what it could bring to them. Spurs at the moment are the benchmark. Chelsea are currently around £30m per season behind Spurs in terms of matchday income.

“You can see the gains that they are trying to make. If you are looking at how you invest to make those gains, you might go in a little bit higher than the value of the land if you are going to get an extra, say, £30m per season.

“That gives you some sort of idea about how important it could be for them moving forward.

“In terms of how high they are going to go, you have to look to the owner. I also think with the investment behind the club, you would be pretty confident that they would come out on top in a bidding war.

“So, I don’t think it would be too far away from that £50m figure. I think the club is in a strong position to get that land if it really wants it.”
